TONKS, Henry (1862-1937). Artist. Autograph Letter Signed to Marriott, 1 page 8vo, The Slade School of Fine Art, 2 July 1927. Thanking Marriott for the sympathetic article he had written on the Slade School, which had touched Tonks deeply, and declaring 'I have put so much of my life into this place'. Tonks had been connected with the Slade School since, as a young man, he joined Frederick Brown, the then Slade professor of art, as his assistant. This famous teaching partnership counted among its pupils Augustus John, William Orpen and other distinguished students. In 1917, Tonks succeeded to the professorship. He was widely considered the outstanding teacher of the time, and was responsible for the high esteem in which the Slade School was held. It is probable that his correspondent was Sir John Marriott, whose voluminous writings covered most subjects. Marriott was, by his own admission, an enthusiast rather than a researcher, and he was very effective in that role. [No: 7640]
