POPE, Alexander (1688-1744). Poet. Printed Receipt Signed with autograph insertion, 1 page 8vo (oblong), no date. The receipt for two guineas, the first instalment for the translation of the Illiad, received from Lord Compton (name inserted by Pope). A note in ink at the foot in a nineteenth-century hand gives the immediate provenance as [William] Upcott (1779-1845), whose enormous collections of autographs were variously dispersed during and after his lifetime.
