RYLANDS, Enriqueta Augustina (1843-1908). Founder of the John Rylands Library, Manchester.
Autograph Letter Signed to Dr Arnold, 3 pages 8vo, Longford Hall, Stretford, Manchester, 3 July 1906. Wishing him well with his sanatorium in Hailey and offering to supply a reference for it.

'... I have just returned to Stretford. The whole of the autumn & winter I spent in Torquay. ...'

Enriqueta Rylands founded the Rylands Library to commemorate her husband, John Rylands, after his death in 1888. She had the library built in what was then a run-down section of Manchester and filled it with 40,000 volumes from the library of Earl Spencer at Althorp. Further acquisitions, including the manuscripts of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, served to make the John Rylands one of the world's greatest libraries.
