HUGO, Victor (1802-1885). French novelist and playwright. Autograph Note Signed, on a slip of paper ca 70 x 180 mm (2½ x 7 inches) laid down on the remains of an album leaf and undated. 'Prière de donner aux pauvres une livre sterling. 'Victor Hugo was exiled to the Channel Islands in 1851 and lived from 1855 until 1870 at Hauteville House in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey. Hence, perhaps the curious combination of a French request for a donation to the poor in English currency. [No: 26113]
