THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Novelist.
Autograph Letter Signed to Patrick Chalmers in Aberdeen, 1 page 8vo with envelope, 36 Onslow Square, 24 February 1859. The heading in his upright hand and the text sloping. Declining an invitation to speak to the students of Marischal College on the grounds of pressure of work and illness.

'... my work, through constant attacks of illness, has fallen so much in arrears, that I can't afford the many days wh. would be required for a visit to the North, and for the preparation of such an address as would be worthy of my audience there. ...'

The year following this letter marked the unification of Marichal College and King's College to form the University of Aberdeen.
