The book in question was by John D. Littlepage, first published in New York 1938, and in England in June 1940. It is an American mining engineer's account of what he saw and did during ten years of gold mining in Stalinist Russia.

'I am constantly recommending people to read Littlepage In Search of Soviet Gold as the most illuminating work about Soviet Russia in existence. Nobody seems able to get a copy. It is a Harrap publication & I think copies were imported. But it is beyond all question an important book & good reading & it ought to be generally accessible.'
