Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent [unfortunately], 2½ pages 8vo (some old repairs), Albany, 26 June 1806. An early letter, written at the very outset of his architectural career, describing the progress of work, perhaps at Lowther Castle, which was his first important country house commission; returning an estimate, probably for a different job, and commenting on it; and asking his correspondent whether he would be able to undertake the work. 'Finding the wall at the back of the closet, where the staircase is proposed to be made, in so ruinous a state, that to keep it up would in all probability be attended with more expence than its removal, I have given directions that it be pulled down & cleared away. The foundations also of the north wall appear in so shattered a condition that it must still be taken down lower until we find a more substantial point to build upon. ...' £235 [No: 25189] The first image is of the first page.
