STAEL, Madame Germaine de (1766-1817). French writer.

Expressing her desire to see her again very soon ('je pense à vous voir dear lady dès que je vous ai quittée'), promising that if she does not hear to the contrary, she will be at Mrs Deamer's the following evening between 7 and 8, and will then go on to Miss 'Berrie' [probably Mary Berry (1763-1852, author) or her sister Agnes with whom she lived]; she knows that it is not customary to make visits in the evening, but is so keen to see her again that she asks this special favour, adding that there is no need to bother Mrs Deamer, 'votre silence est oui').
Mme de Staël had arrived in England in June 1813 and, as the sworn enemy of Napoleon, who had exiled her from France, was lionized by the world of politics and letters alike.
