LISTER, Joseph (1827-1912). Surgeon. Founder of antiseptic surgery.
Certificate, signed 'Joseph Lister', that William Weir had regularly attended lectures on the principles and practice of Surgery in 1862. On card, 78 x 114 mm. (3 x 4½ inches).
 Lister had been appointed professor of surgery at Glasgow University in 1860, the same year that he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. It was not until 1867, however, that he published his papers in The Lancet setting forth his system of antiseptic surgery.
