HAMILTON, Sir William (1731-1803). Diplomatist and art collector.
Cheque in the form of an Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Ragland of Naples, 1 page 8vo (oblong, with a stain in the centre not affecting the text), Naples, 3 December 1798. Ordering the payment of 300 ducats to Vincenzo Sabatino 'for my private use'.
Written towards the end of Hamilton's career as British plenipotentiary at Naples, shortly after he had received news of the total loss of his second collection of vases in a shipwreck off the Scilly Isles and immediately before the Hamiltons escaped from Naples with Nelson, who commenced his affair with Emma at this very time.
Provenance: from a collection formed by A.M. Broadley in 1903.
