ADDISON, Joseph (1672-1719). Essayist, poet & statesman.
Document Signed ('J. Addison' at the foot), 1 page large folio (slightly trimmed at the foot), 22 April 1709. A commission issued by Thomas, Earl of Wharton, and signed by him, with papered seal, raising Thomas Plaistow to the rank of captain 'in the Regiment of foote to be forthwith raised for her Majesty's Service'.
 In 1708 Addison had been appointed secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland, Thomas, first marquess of Wharton and first marquess of Malmesbury etc. (6148-1745), who with Addison was member of the influential Kit-Cat Club.
