SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Playwright.
Autograph Letter Signed ('G. Bernard Shaw') to Frank Reynolds, 1½ pages 8vo (oblong), 10 Adelphi Terrace and Ayot St Lawrence, 6 April 1927 (with autograph envelope, worn). Together with an 8-page carbon typescript with autograph additions, entitled Scene VI / How "they" understand Bernard Shaw, a spoof purporting to support Shaw's contention that only the Germans understand his plays.
'The enclosed may be very good fun; but is it good business? My enemies in Paris do what they can to represent me as a 1914-18 pro-German. Even if that were true it would not help your efforts to popularise my plays in France to advertise it. ...'
Shaw's pencilled annotation to the typescript comprises the replacement of the word 'Nonsense' with the passage 'So much the worse. All the misunderstandings of my plays arise from people trusting to those accursed booklets instead of to inspiration.'
