'TICHBORNE' Sir Roger Arthur Orton (1834-1898), the Tichborne Claimant.
Autograph Letter Signed ('R.C.D. Tichborne') to James Bartlett, 2 facing pages 8vo (rather soiled, and repaired in the folds), 34 Bessborough Street, 22 August 1873. Thanking him for a letter and 'for troubling yourself on my behalf', adding that 'I believe my attorney is in communication with Mrs Mountjoy. A note in ink on the second page, signed by Bartlett, reads 'R.D. Tichborne died / April 1898.' The Tichborne case dominated newspapers and divided public opinion in the period leading up to the trial, and the verdict in 1874 caused enormous excitement among those who had supported Orton's claim. Some were convinced that the prosecution was the outcome of a conspiracy fomented by the jesuits. However, by the time Orton was released from prison in 1884, his efforts to revive interest in the case were largely met with ridicule. £225 [No: 24386] The image links to a larger or more detailed version. |
