NAPOLEON I (1769-1821). Emperor of the French.
Letter Signed ('N' with a flourish) to [Henri-Jacques-Guillaume] Clarke, Duc de Feltre (1765-1818, Marshal of France), 1 page 4to, Paris, 26 March 1813. Written during Napoleon's campaign for the liberation of Germany. A small note pinned to the foot of the letter records that it had been forwarded.
Asking him to write to General Vandamme who should be found at Wesel and to order him to to Osnabrück and Bremen to secure the surrounding countryside pending the arrival of reinforcements. He assumes that Vandamme will have 10 or 12 batallions and that we will leave Generals Dufour and Dumonceau at Wesel.
 Napoleon is reputed to have said of Vandamme (Dominique-Joseph René Vandamme, Count of Unseburg (1770-1830) that 'if I had two of you, the only solution would be to have one hang the other'.
