BRIGHT, Dr William (1824-1901). Church historian, devotional & hymn writer.
Autograph Letter Signed to [Robert] Payne Smith (1818-1895, orientalist and theologian), 4 pages 8vo, Cuddesden Vicarage (on Christ Church paper), 21 September [1871]. Bewailing the sudden death two days previously of [Richard William] Jelf (1798-1871), who had been principal of King's College, London, from 1844 to 1868, after which he became proctor in convocation of Christ Church, Oxford.
'... I do feel, however, what a blank will be caused by his departure - what a kindly, genial, and hearty presence is finally removed from our Christ Church life. To me he was ever a most cordial neighbour and friend. ... The smallpox may, perhaps, have been caught while he was in Wales or Ireland: but it only declared itself about two full days before his death. ... the funeral was necessarily speedy ... our dear friend was buried in a brick vault in Holywell Cemetery. ...'
