STAINER, Sir John (1840-1901). Organist & composer.
Autograph Letter Signed presumably to a dean, 2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf, 5 Amen Court, 10 August no year. Explaining that he had been too tired to call at the deanery, and praising then [?Father Willis] organ.
Written when organist of St Paul's Cathedral (1872-1888), but frustratingly undated so that one cannot positively identify the instrument to which he refers, although it is entirely possible, indeed likely, that he alludes to the completion of the rebuild of the St Paul's organ by Henry Willis in 1873.
'... I fully intended to have called at the Deanery between the afternoon and evening services, but I was so tired that I laid down and rested. The organ is really splendid & reflects great credit on its talented builder. ...'
