SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Playwright. Autograph Letter Signed on both sides of a correspondence card to H[oward] G[regory] Graham, 29 October 1943. An uncharacteristically helpful letter of advice to an aspiring author. 'Never send a manuscript to anyone but a publisher. He will pay somebody to read it - somebody who lives by reading books for publishers. You will not then be wasting their time: it is their business to read and publish. ... never send it to an author. He has trouble enough with his own books. ... Keep sending your book in until some publisher bites. Do not be discouraged by refusals. ... Dont, however, begin by sending your treatise to a publisher who specializes in detective stories. ...'
