ANGELL, Sir (Ralph) Norman (1872-1967). Peace campaigner and author.
Fine Typewritten Letter Signed to Basil Gregg, 1 page 4to, 8 Rue Weber, Paris, 1 March 1910. Refuting the argument that Germany might wish to seize British colonies, probably in response to an argument occasioned by his best-selling work The Great Illusion, published this year. '... Why should the increase of Germany's population push her to "seize" British colonies? Such of her population as desire to emigrate can and do go to those colonies now, as to the United States, to Brazil and to Argentina. It is calculated that at least twenty millions at the present day in the United States are of direct German descent, and until a few years ago an American city like Milwaukee was far more German than American, the schools, newspapers, institutions, were practically all German. The average German would far rather emigrate to such a place where he will be free from German officialdom. ...' £125 [No: 24095] |
