CHARLES II and Samuel PEPYS
Document Signed ('Charles R' at the head and 'S Pepys' at the foot), 1 page folio (rather foxed overall, the king's signature faint, laid down on board), 1673/4. A warrant for the appointment of a boatswain to a new ship (unnamed) being built at Portsmouth dockyard.

'Whereas wee have thought fitt to appoint Cuthbert Bembridge to be Boatswaine of Our new ship of the second rate now a building at Portsmouth. Our will and pleasure is, That you cause him the said Cuthbert Bembridge to be entred Boatswaine of Our said ship accordingly, soe soone as shee shalbe in condicon to receve such an Officer, together with such allowance of wages & Victualls for himself and servant as is proper and usuall for the Boatswaine of our said ship. For which this shalbe you[u]r warrant. Given at Our Court at Whitehall this 22th day of January 1673'
