THE SIEGE OF MAFEKING
A Mafeking Siege Note in the amount of ten shillings, number 3101, dated March 1900, together with the 2 April 1900 issue of The Mafeking Mail The note bears the faint signature of Robert Bradshaw Clarke Urry, manager of the Standard Bank at Mafeking and that of Captain Greener, the Army's Chief Paymaster. Both the notes and the newspaper were initiated under the command of Robert Baden-Powell and helped to toughen the morale and resolve of the people of Mafeking. Any paper that could be found was used. The present example was issued on the 172nd day of the siege, just over a month before the siege was lifted on the 17th of May 1900. It carries news of the Boer positions, the praise afforded the siege sufferers, and an advertisement for the Siege Hairdressing and Shaving Saloon. £450 [No: 23995] The siege note only is shown. |
