CLIVE, Edward, Baron, 1st Earl of Powys (1754-1839). Eldest son of Robert Clive. Governor of Madras, 1798-1803.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Clive') to the Rev Charles Walcot, 2½ pages 8vo, (tear at left margin, not affecting the text, remains of former mount), Dorset St, February 24 no year. Regretting that he has only limited influence on Church preferments.
'... With the Lord Chancellor the case is different. There are many in Shropshire of his Livings, & More a Chance of success with his Lordship I hope.'
Clive was Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire from 1775 to 1798 and 1804 until his death.
