VIARDOT, [Michelle] Pauline (1821-1910). Mezzo-soprano.
Autograph Letter Signed in French to an unnamed correspondent ('Monsieur'), 1 page 8vo , Sunday 11 November [1860]. With a translation. She regrets that she cannot help him with tickets - she does not even ask for any for her own family. She advises him to get in touch direct with Carvalho.
Léon Carvalho was director of the Théâtre-Lyrique from 1856 to 1868. It was in 1859 that Viardot began her famous performances of Gluck's Orphée there under Berlioz; they ran throughout 1860 and into 1862. The present letter almost certainly relates to this production.
