LOWE, Sir Hudson (1769-1844). Governor of St Helena during Napoleon's captivity.
Autograph Letter Signed to Admiral Sir (William) Sidney Smith (1764-1840), 2 pages 4to with blank leaf, Passy, 8 November 1825. Together with a small dried sprig said to have been taken from Napoleon's tomb on St Helena by Captain Morris of the Earl Balearias in 1853.
Written from Paris on the eve of his departure to take up his position as second in command in Ceylon, a post which Lowe held from 1825 until 1828. Admiral Sir Sidney Smith himself lived in Paris for much of his later life, and is buried there.
'I have been favored with your letters for Mahomet Ali Pacha and Baghot Jassuf, the suggestions respecting the transmission of which shall be punctually attended to.
'I feel the more greatly obliged, than for the valuable letter of introduction with which you have furnished me, by the kindness and consideration of your suggestions as to the manner in which I can render it, not only useful and honorable to myself but advantageous, perhaps, to the public service, even although I may not have the opportunity of delivering it in person to Mahomet Ali himself. This is a manner of adding to a real favor, to which I beg you to believe I am not insensible. ...'
