BRUNEL, Isambard Kingdom (1806-1859). Civil Engineer. Autograph Letter Signed to E.K. Copleston, 3 pages 8vo (traces of mount on the reverse), 18 Duke Street, 17 November 1852 (docketed 'Devon & Dorset Rail'). Discussing the passage of the railway through Copleston's garden, and suggesting that he would in some way benefit from the desecration of his property. '... I could not expect that you would "assent" to the proposed measure which I am quite prepared to admit would materially injure an ornamental part of the pleasure ground of the House - all that I ask is that we should discuss the question as a matter of business - notwithstanding the injury to the garden which may be compensated for the whole measure may be made greatly beneficial to the property.'
