STEPHENSON, George, autographs, letters, documents, manuscripts
STEPHENSON, George (1781-1848). Civil engineer. Founder of railways.
Autograph Letter Signed to J.B. Simpson, a solicitor of Derby, 2 pages 8vo with address-leaf (small seal tear), Tapton House, 2 January 1843. Concerning his interest in acquiring the Ticknall lime works.
The lime works at Ticknall, in Derbyshire, thrive on an outcrop of carboniferous limestone, and have belonged to Harpur(-Crewe) family since 1621, providing revenue for the estates of Calke Abbey, itself named after the Calke, or chalk which was worked there. The works are well-connect by railway and canal, but it is not clear whether Stephenson pursued his interest in acquiring them.
'I have been duly favoured with your letter of the 29th Ult, relative to the Ticknall Limeworks & wherein you state that you are now propared to receive my proposals for taking the same.
'Before I can make any definite Tender, it will be necessary for me to inspect & to thoroughly understand the position of the works, and the fixtures attached to them, and for this purpose I will shortly visit Ticknall & will inform you so soon as I can fix the day to go there, & when I shall be glad to meet Sir George Crewe's Agent on the spot. I beg to conclude by stating that I am quite disposed to negociate with you, fairly & candidly in the business.'
