MURDOCH, Dame Iris (1919-1999). Novelist.
Autograph Letter Signed [to Brian Pearce] on two sides of a correspondence card, no salutation, no place, no date. Analysing the couple, Bill and Nan Mor, from her novel Sandcastle and saying how glad she is that her correspondent and his wife have had 'a happy solution'.
'... I think there is no 'right' answer to the question about the novel, any more than there might be in such a situation in real life. Mor might have been very happy with Rain: though perhaps it is unlikely. On the other hand, I doubt if his marriage was likely to become happier either. It wasn't too unsuccessful a marriage, probably, in the long run. Should one gamble for complete happiness? Then there were the children.. .'
