Authorizing her to put on his play 'The Mouse Trap' for charity, and asking that she obtain official permission from his Edinburgh publishers.
After returning to the United States in 1886, Howells wrote several plays, of which The Mouse Trap, a farce, was one. It never quite achieved the success of Agatha Christie's subsequent book and play of that name.
