CLARE, John (1793-1864). Poet. Signature and subscription from the foot of a letter (tipped to a backing-sheet), no date. 'I am my dear Mrs G. / Yours very sincerely / John Clare'. The evidence points to this being from a letter, now lost, to Elizabeth Gilchrist, the wife of Clare's close friend, Octavius Gilchrist. Although many letters to the latter have survived, only one which is believed to be to his wife appears to be known. (See The Letters of John Clare, ed. Mark Storey, OUP 1985, page 576n). [No: 21958]
