BUTLER, Samuel, autographs, letters, documents, manuscripts
Unless otherwise indicated the image is of the most significant part of the object
BUTLER, Samuel (1835-1902). Author of 'The Way of All Flesh'.
Autograph Letter Signed on a penny postcard to Alfred Marks (traces of former mounting at the edges of the address-side), 15 Clifford's Inn, 17 April 1884. Thanking Marks for a copy of Anne and remaking that he does not see Wallis's name on the title page as having done the drawings.
Butler probably refers to the painter and illustrator Henry Wallis, whose Death of Chatterton made him famous. George Meredith posed for Chatterton, and as an unfortunate result Wallis eloped with his wife.
