ROSSINI, Gioachino (1792-1868). Composer.
Autograph Letter Signed to Fossin, 1 page 8vo with address-leaf on headed paper of the Théâtre Royal Italien, Paris, 25 November 1833. With a translation.
He is sending Fossin a ticket for a box for this evening at the Théâtre français, 'flattering myself that you might enjoy this new play ("comedia")'. From now on he intends to make a point of sending Fossin tickets for the Théâtre Italien; he has been ill, which is why he has not done so until now.
The new play to which Rossini refers is probably Bertrand et Raton, by Eugène Scribe (the librettist of numerous operas including Rossini's Comte Ory); the first performance of Scribe's new comédie was given on 14 November.
After effectively retiring after the production of Guillaume Tell in 1829, Rossini maintained close links with the Théâtre Italien, particularly supporting the work of Bellini and Donizetti.
