DE LA MARE, Walter John (1873-1956). Poet and novelist.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Wjdlm') to the illustrator, Hugh Chesterman, 2 pages 4to (oblong), Thornsett Road, Anerley, ?8 June ?1921. Regarding some project concerning [Naomi] Royde-Smith which Chesterman had abondoned, and discussing his own literary career.
'... Reviewing is hateful work - I've had about ten years of it, & even now have only freed myself for a while, I suppose, until my new book is done. But I've had wonderful luck in my editors, & that's all there is to say about that. This shouldn't & mustn't make any difference between us - though, as I say, for the last time, I do sincerely regret that you gave the work up with any soreness on either your own or Miss R.S's side. ...'
De la Mare had met the writer Naomi Royd-Smith in 1911, and was in love with her for the next five years, writing her nearly 400 letters.
