Arranging for a visit [to the Great Eastern], which had recently been launched. 'I send a note to my resident assistant at the ship - but I fear the work is too advanced for Mr Pollock to be able to see the construction.'The difficulties attending the launch of the Great Eastern are well known. The ship had finally entered the water on 31 January 1858 and was then completed whilst afloat. It was at the trial of the engines in September 1859 that Brunel collapsed. He died on 15 September.
