LAYARD, Sir Austen Henry (1817-1894). Excavator of Nineveh.
Long Autograph Letter Signed to Lord Reay, 3½ pages 8vo on thinly black-edged paper, Venice, 6 October 1888. Describing the constitution and intentions of the Venezia-Murano Company, and asking Reay to assure the Gaickwar of Baroda of its respectability.
'The Gaickwar of Baroda, who was at Venice a short time ago, has given a large order to the Venezia-Murano Company for mosaic pavements. ... The Venezia-Murano Cy. was founded by me many years ago with the object of reviving the arts of glass-blowing and mosaic in Venice. The shareholders were, and are, persons interested in the fine arts and the prosperity of Venice. The Directors are Sir William Drake ... Mr L.M. Nate and myself. ... If you could convey your opinion as the respectability of the Company to the Gaickwar you would greatly oblige me. ...'
Donald James Mackay, 11th Baron Reay (1839-1921), was governor of Bombay from 1885 to 1890.
